The Stock Market Game

Ah, the stock market game. To some, it’s an exciting opportunity to try to turn a small investment into a much larger one, and to others it’s a source of stress and anxiety. But regardless of your opinion, there’s no denying that playing the stock market game can be a great way to learn about investing, finance, and the market.

For those not familiar, the stock market game is basically a simulated stock market in which players invest virtual money in stocks, bonds, and other assets. Players receive a set amount of money to start and can select from a range of stocks. The goal is to make the most money over the course of a certain amount of time.

The Origin

The Stock Market Game was created by the Securities Industry Association (SIA) in 1977. It was created to assist educators in teaching students about personal finance and the stock market. The program was later acquired by SIFMA Foundation for Investor Education and is now known as "InvestWrite"

IMVESTWRITE

Since its launch in 2014, Investwrite has provided teachers, mentors, and students with a platform to demonstrate their mastery of economic and investing concepts while also exploring the world of stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Participating students write an essay based on a prompt selected by Investwrite. Judges assess the written work, taking into account creativity and originality, as well as its relevance to the prompt. Each year, the contest culminates with a national award ceremony honoring the highest-scoring authors.

Participation Rules

1. Create a Team – Create a team with a minimum of two players and a maximum of four players per Team.

2. Agree to Terms of Use – The Game rules must be accepted before playing the Game.

3. Sign Up for an Account – Players must open and maintain a brokerage account with SMG’s third-party stockbroker to access the Game.

4. Choose Your Portfolio – Teams can consist of up to 20 stocks and ETFs, but trading is limited to U.S. equities only.

5. Track Your Returns and Compete – Teams can track their rankings on the Game’s live leaderboards and can compete against other teams in the global Game.

6. Closing Date – The last trading day of the Game is the official closing date and no trades can be placed after that date.

7. Awards – Award winners are determined soon after the closing date based on portfolio performance in the Game.

Participation Fees

The cost of participating in the Stock Market Game varies depending on the program you are enrolled in and where you are located. Generally, programs will charge an entry fee of $20 to $50 per team or student, and they may also charge additional fees for hosting activities.

Investwrite’s wide-reaching scope promotes the development of personal finance skills and offers participants the opportunity to explore the various facets of the financial world. With the support of the Stock Market Game Foundation, Investwrite equips students with the ability to analyze current events and decisions from an investing perspective. Through the experience, participants gain insight into the financial decisions that shape our world.
